A new type of athlete will be going to the Olympics in 2024: The b-boy (and b-girl).
According to CNN, break dancing (also called breaking) will officially become the first DanceSport event at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
“The WDSF could not be prouder to have breaking included at Paris 2024, and we thank everyone who helped make it possible: the executive board of the IOC, the Paris 2024 organizers, the WDSF staff and, most importantly, the breaking community itself,” said Shawn Tay, president of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), to CNN. “It was a true team effort to get to this moment and we will redouble our efforts in the lead-up to the Olympic Games to make sure the breaking competition at Paris 2024 will be unforgettable.”
In Paris, 32 athletes (16 men and 16 women) will compete at the Paris Games by doing one-on-one competitions, CNN reported. Breaking also made its debut at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in 2018.
Anyone who is a fan of the art form can look forward to the upcoming Summer Games. As evidenced by all those dance battle movies of the early 2000’s (a la "You Got Served"), breaking requires superior balance, core strength, and skill, much like other sporting events including gymnastics or figure skating. Dancers condition and strengthen their bodies like athletes — which makes one wonder whether other dance forms will make their way to the Olympics in the future.
According to CNN, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board decided to include breaking as a way to encourage younger audiences to watch.
In addition to breaking joining the Paris Olympics, three more new sporting events — skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing — are slated for the Tokyo Olympics.
Originally scheduled to take place earlier in 2020, the Tokyo Olympics had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is now scheduled to begin on July 23, 2021.
