Melrose, in Scotland, is a cosy spot for an autumn staycation.
It might feel as though summer never really started but today, Saturday, September 23, is the official Met Office date for the start of autumn.

According to Which? Travel’s latest inland town ranking, Melrose on the Scottish borders is one of the UK’s best staycation spots.
The Scottish hotspot scored four stars for food and drink and five stars for scenery and tourist attractions. The town also received top marks for peace and quiet.
Melrose is a historic town that sits on the bank of the River Tweed. It was even named the best place to live in Scotland in a former Sunday Times poll.
The birthplace of Rugby Sevens, Melrose is situated in the shadow of the Eldon Hills.
The picturesque area has been inhabitated for thousands of years and the Roman Army arrived in AD79 and built a fort.
The town’s most famous attraction is the imposing Melrose Abbey. The Abbey was founded by David I in 1136 and was Scotland’s first Cistercian monastery.
A tourist ‘sammarshall24’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “It was amazing walking through the grounds and feeling what history it had. It is so well worth visiting.”
The Abbey’s church is famed for its quirky carvings, including a patriotic pig playing the bagpipes.
Visitors to Melrose can also check out Abbotsford, the former home of 19th century novelist, Walter Scott. Tourists can see some of the objects that inspired his work.
‘Mary Ann V’ wrote: “We had such a wonderful visit to Abbotsford. The house is very beautiful. The gardens were so pretty and interesting.”
Melrose is also close to some fantastic hiking spots and tourists will be able to admire incredible views at Elidon Hills and St Cuthberts Way.
It takes just under two and a half hours to summit Elidon Hills.
