Families can go on a steam train trip with Santa and his elves this Christmas

It’s finally December and we’re all beginning to ring in the season with festive days out and events.

You might have booked to head to a Christmas market for shopping and rides or else Kew Garden’’s Glow Trail for a cosy walk sipping on hot chocolate.

This year, there are some bookable events that will really blow your family away.

Just picture the scene, snow on the ground, a vintage train chugging along with plumes of steam erupting from the chimney…

The Santa Steam Express will give you and your family a real sense of festive wonder as you meet Father Christmas and his helpers on the classic steam train.

The hour and 15 minute experience includes a welcoming drink and sweet treat for children before they meet Santa and his elves.

You’ll be sat in modern and beautifully decorated coaches with panoramic windows to offer the best views.

You can choose whether to ride in standard class where children will be given a gift from Santa and adults can enjoy mince pies, tea and coffee.

Or, upgrade to first class where children who have booked a ticket will receive a gift from Santa and will have a chance to meet him and his elves.

Adults will be served mince pies plus mulled wine or tea/coffee.

First class seats include tables or four or tables of two – and you may have an extra person sat with you if you’re a group of three.

The journeys set out from London Victoria and return to the same station after the journey is done.

The train currently booked to haul guests around the route is the Stanier Class no. 45231 Sherwood Forester which was built in 1936.

Tickets cost from £30 for children and from £40 for adults.

The Steam Dreams Rail Company will be running the special Santa train ride on December 14, 16, 19 and 21.

The Santa Steam Express isn't the only Christmassy journey you can take though.

The Christmas Steam Express offers a unique festive dining experience inside festively decorated 1970s carriages.

Those who select Premier Dining – at a cost of £159 per head – will be treated to a welcome drink and three course meal while chugging along through the Surrey Hills and back to London Victoria.

Those in first class – costing £89 – will get a welcome drink and a festive snack box.

Pullman-style diners will be “seated in vintage carriages with wood panelling, comfortable seats and curtains at the windows.”

The extra comfy seats have extra legroom and servers like those of a bygone era.

Steam Dreams also offers a number of day trips including London to Lincoln Christmas Market, Southend to Chichester for carols and London Victoria to Bath Christmas Market – from £109 per person.
