Flights are usually a time where passengers can wind down and relax while enjoying the on-board services. Cabin crew often provide fliers with free beverages to keep them going until they reach their destination. Flight attendants have previously revealed many secrets that they have discovered while on the job and the reason why you shouldn’t drink coffee on a plane is shocking.

Next time you think about ordering a coffee, tea or water on a plane, you might want to reconsider your choice.
One former flight attendant explained on forum Reddit why you should never drink a coffee while on board.
They wrote: “Airline water is so bad it is recommended you not wash your hands after using the bathroom but to use hand sanitiser instead.
“Also skip that tea or coffee and get a bottled drink. Most Airlines tested positive for E.coli and coliform in their water.”

When making coffee or tea, cabin crew members use the tap water on the plane.
Therefore they recommended avoiding water, coffee and tea and recommend opting for something in a bottle or a can.
Recent testing on airplanes found the tap water to be unsanitary with some planes testing positive for the presence of microorganisms in the water, including bacteria.
Another flight attendant told Business Insider that even flight attendants will stick to bottled drinks because some crew members have previously fallen sick from drinking the tap water.

The attendant said: “Flight attendants will not drink hot water on the plane.
“They will not drink plain coffee, and they will not drink plain tea.”
This is because while the water tanks are cleaned, cabin crew are never informed how often they are cleaned.
Boiling water for beverages like tea or coffee usually kills the bacteria making the drink safe to consume.

However an environmental scientist who goes by the name Brena Wiles revealed that this doesn’t make a difference.
She said: “It might kill some of the organisms – the more susceptible ones – but it’s not going to kill the majority of them.”
Airlines have since re-assured customers that their water tanks are clean and the on-board water they use for coffee and tea is perfectly safe for consumption.
Delta and United Airlines say that they use a high-tech disinfection process every four months to clean their tanks.
However some cabin crew members aren’t convinced that four times a year is sufficient seeing as thousands of passengers travel on planes each day.
A study from the Environmental Protection Agency found that one in eight airplanes do not meet the standards for water safety, and that 12 percent of commercial planes in the US, tested positive for high levels of bacteria in tap water supply.
Therefore, it is always advised to either skip tea and coffee on-board and opt for a beverage in a bottle or can or you can purchase a hot drink before you step onto a plane.
Planes are notoriously known for their lack of hygiene, with a recent study conducted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation found that seat pockets were amongst one of the filthiest spots on a plane.
Seat pockets were found to have traces of E.coli, while the other areas including the tray table had traces of bacteria.
Flight attendants have previously revealed that tray tables don’t get cleaned everyday, especially when there is a tight turn around and a flight needs to get on its way.
