From centuries-old cathedrals to bustling markets, Lincoln is the perfect place to visit for anyone travelling around the UK this autumn.

Lincoln is a beautiful city which has become famous for its medieval architecture, but unfortunately during the summer months, it tends to be packed with tourists.

However, now in autumn is the best time to explore Lincoln and not only will there be fewer visitors around, but this historic city is surrounded by picturesque parks such as the Whisby Nature Park and the Arboretum which are known for their spectacular autumn leaves.

Not only that but the city’s cobblestone streets, medieval castle remains and world-famous gothic Lincoln Cathedral look incredible at this time of year, and the city has many cosy pubs or teahouses to stay toasty in at this time of year.

According to the Oxford Royale, Lincoln has been named one of the best cities to visit in the autumntime due to its rich history and gothic architecture. They said: “If you’re interested in medieval England, Lincoln is a great place to visit…[the] city is home to a beautiful 14th-century Gothic cathedral, a 12th-century bridge, and an 11th-century Norman castle; the latter holds one of only four preserved copies of the original Magna Carta.”

Lincoln’s autumn weather tends to be very mild before winter begins, so you can easily wander the city’s historic wonders during the autumn season.

Lincoln Cathedral should be the first place you visit and you can immediately see it no matter where you are in the city, as this iconic landmark for the tallest building in the world for over 200 years, overtaking the Great Pyramid of Giza until the 1500s.

This magnificent building was commissioned by Willian the Conquerer in the 11th century during the Norman invasion of Britain, so there are almost a thousand years of history to explore at the cathedral.

You can then walk in the footsteps of royalty by visiting Lincoln Castle, and the Norman castle is a beautiful place to have a coffee or picnic in autumn as visitors as free to explore the castle grounds. The castle features an archelogy exhibition and spooky Victorian dungeon, as well as being the home to the famous Magna Casta charter.

However, not only does the city look incredibly gothic and atmospheric in autumn, but there are many celebrations which make the city worth a visit.

In October the city holds the International Frequency Festival, in which artists flock to the city to put on live performances, exhibitions and art installations. There will be plenty to do no matter who you are, and those who enjoy being spooked at this time of year should visit the festival Twilight Zone, where after dark there will be massive inflatable monsters, light shows, and an Aurora Borealis attraction.

Lincoln also features many outdoor markets throughout the year, including the Farmers market which takes place on the third Saturday of every month in which visitors can browse local produce and delicious treats. If you are beginning to think about your Christmas shopping, the market is the perfect place to look for some gift ideas.

Once you are done exploring the city there is a series of historic pubs to choose from to shield you from the cold weather. Both the Struggles Inn and the Lion and Snake are some of the oldest pubs in the city, which not only offer brewed ales and hearty pub grub but have their own fascinating histories which makes it worth visiting.
