Castles have been capturing the imagination of tourists the world over for as long as anyone can remember, and Britons inspired I’m a Celebrity’s Gwrych Castle may be wondering where they should go. The world’s best castles have been named in a new study by Stokemont.

Out of the 52 most beautiful castles, nine were in the UK.

The UK was top for the number of castles on the list, with France coming second with six.

Gwrych Castle came 48th, proving the ITV show did not make it as popular as could have been believed.

In the top 20 list, however, Scottish castles dominated, alongside French and German palaces.

Coming top was France’s Château de Versailles.

The palace, just outside Paris, was the official residence of the kings of France.

Its extensive gardens and Hall of Mirrors are world famous, making Versailles the best castle in the world.

In second place was Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle.

The German castle was the inspiration behind some of Disney’s most famous castles, and the fairytale castle is a firm favourite with the 1.5 million of tourists who visit every year.

In third place was Prague castle.

The castle is a Guinness World Record holder, having been named the largest ancient castle in the world.

In fourth place, the first UK entry is Edinburgh castle.

Overlooking Scotland’s capital, the castle is a must-visit attraction for most Edinburgh visitors.

On Tripadvisor, user GWoolfe said: “No trip to Edinburgh is complete without a trip to the castle.

“There are lots of hidden gems within the castle like the dog cemetery and stories in the audio guide.

“Check out the prisoners of war exhibition where you get a sense of how the prisoners lived.

“And don’t miss St Margaret’s Chapel which is Edinburgh’s oldest building.”

Alan P wrote: “Cannot visit Edinburgh without seeing the castle. A lovely spot and a well-kept bit of history. Very interesting.”

User Rhcrtr agreed: “Enjoyed our visit to the castle. One of those places you just have to tick off the list when in Edinburgh. The views from the top are amazing!”

In fifth place was France again.

The Mont Saint-Michel fortress’s setting on a tidal island makes it a very popular destination for many tourists.
