The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has ranked the world’s most beautiful villages. The Best Tourism Villages award celebrates villages around the world.
Villages are given the prestigious award for their efforts to preserve culture, tradition and biodiversity.
One of this year’s winning villages was beautiful Lerici on the the breathtaking Gulf of La Spezia in Italy.
UNWTO said: “Nestled in the embrace of the Mediterranean Sea, Lerici emerges as an idyllic haven, seamlessly blending nature’s beauty, cultural richness, and a commitment to sustainable progress.
“This enchanting Italian village, with its mild culture and lush hills, offers a welcoming sanctuary for tourists seeking a harmonious blend of relaxation and adventure.”

Connected by ferry to Cinque Terre, Lerici has gorgeous beaches and a charming old town that’s easy to explore on foot.
The beautiful village was also adored by several famous British poets. Percy Byshhe Shelley and Mary Shelley lived in the village while Lord Byron once swam to the village from Portovenere to see the couple.
It’s not hard to see why the literary legends were so attracted to Lerici. Its colourful buildings and sea views are some of Italy’s most captivating.

Many tourists visit Castello di Lerici while in the village. ‘Alessandro F’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Beautiful castle dominating the port. It’s over the hill reached by little picturesque streets inside the ancient city.”
The gorgeous village is also home to Italy’s first underwater laboratory for scientific research. The project monitors ocean acidification to protect Lerici’s delicate ecosystem.
UNWTO added: “Lerici presents itself as a home away from home for every tourist. The city extends a warm invitation to explore its treasures, captivating landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and the richness of natural sites, culinary traditions, and ancient culture.”
Lerici is hottest during the summer months but tourists will find it’s much quieter and easier to explore during the spring or autumn.
While Cinque Terre is a short ferry ride away, the popular spot can become extremely crowded during peak season. One tourist said they felt like a “sweaty sardine”.
