The cheapest seaside town in the UK has house prices that are less than a third of the national average – and has its fair share of attractions and reasons to visit.

Saltcoats in North Ayrshire, southwest Scotland, is the cheapest seaside location in the UK according to RightMove.

The average house there costs just £113,395 – less than a third of the national average of £372,812, the real estate company said.

The town boasts several historical attractions, as well as beautiful views. This includes its Victorian town hall and the 15th-century Ardrossan Castle.

RightMove also highlight the expansive green space of Eglinton Country Park nearby.

Homes available include apartments right on the beach, which is one of the towns’ main attractions.

One TripAdvisor user said of the beach: “Saltcoats is a great wee place lovely sandy beach for children and dog to play, smashing views to Arran also good for cycling.”

Others also praised the view of Arran, a Scottish island off the west coast.

One reviewer said: “Been to Saltcoats many times to look at the fascinating geology in the rocks around the harbour which are easily accessible.

“The views out to sea are spectacular with not only Arran clearly visible but the Paps of Jura just north of the island when conditions are just right.”

Saltcoats does not just have the cheapest properties – it’s in one of the cheapest places in the country to live. North Ayrshire as a whole was recently named the most affordable place to live in Scotland – and second-cheapest in the UK – in a study.

PlumbNation explored how the average cost of properties and utilities rose over the past decade, and compared these with wages.

North Ayrshire ranked second in the UK, with average annual pay of £30,485 and an average house price of £125,893, leading to a salary-to-price ratio of 4.13.

This was beaten only by Burnley, who had average annual pay of £27,945 and average house prices of £114,100 for a ratio of 4.08.

Camden in London has the least affordable housing for residents, with the average house price around a staggering 17.5 times that of the average annual salary.
