Turkey has been crowned the ‘cheapest holiday destination’ for British tourists. Holidays in the stunning destination cost less than they did five years ago.
Finance experts at CashLady.com led research to find the cheapest holiday destination for Britons based on exchange rates.
Turkey took the top spot with the team finding that holidays cost less than they did five years ago.
Five years ago, £1 would be equivalent to 4.54 Turkish lira but Britons can now get around 21.5 lira to the pound.
As the pound is relatively strong compared to the Turkish lira, holidaymakers can expect to spend less in Turkey.
In 2019, there were over 2.5 million visits to Turkey according to UK Foreign Office Travel Advice.
Top destinations include Bodrum, Marmaris, Fetihye and Antalya, which are all famous for their beaches.
Marmaris is one of Europe’s best value holiday destinations, according to Post Office Travel Money research.
A bottle of local beer costs around £1.54 in Marmaris while a three course evening meal for two costs around £16.02.
While Marmaris has some of Turkey’s best beaches, culture and history fans will also have plenty to explore.
Marmaris Castle has an incredible archaeology museum which showcases pottery and glassware from the Roman and Byzantine periods.
Tourists can also make a trip to the uninhabited Sedir Island, where legend says Antony and Cleopatra once bathed together.
In the evening, many families flock to see The Dancing Fountain in Marmaris town which hosts a light and music show.
Although the temperature drops in winter, tourists can still expect to enjoy temperatures of around 22 degrees in November.
Britons looking for a city break could head to buzzing Istanbul, which is also one of Meghan Markle’s favourite holiday destinations.
Other cheaper destinations for 2022 included Hungary and Iceland with Brazil and Chile also making the list.
CashLady.com said: “Our runners-up are not only cheaper to visit than they were five years ago, but these destinations also have an abundance of culture and adventure to offer holidaymakers for exciting getaways that stray from the typical trip.”
