World’s first holiday parks for hedgehogs launch in UK – and they’re so adorable

It’s not just humans who have had a rough year in 2020 – hedgehogs need a break too!

The hedgehog population is dwindling and the small mammal was recently put in the endangered list.

While there were around 30 million of the cute rodents in 1950, numbers fell by 98% to reach just 500,000 in 2017.

This is partly because their habitats have been destroyed to build roads and other infrastructure.

So to prevent the hedgehog population from falling so dramatically, Parkdean Resorts has come up with an adorable idea.

The travel firm has created “holiday resorts” for hedgehogs to keep them safe.

Each resort is packed with cute caravan homes with double glazed windows.

The hedgehogs can reside in the miniature houses to keep safe and warm.

They also also get their own decorations – including miniature bunting, flowers and picket fences.

Parkdean Resorts has rolled out the initiative across all of its sites.

It hopes to inspire other Brits to create their own hibernation hedgehog hotels to keep the creatures safe.

To protect hedgehogs, Brits should also ensure their ponds have ramps in so hedgehogs can climb out if needed.

They’re also warned against using pesticides like slug pellets that could be harming other wildlife.

Chief Customer Officer at Parkdean Resorts, Catherine Lynn said: "Hedgehogs becoming endangered is a massive blow for UK wildlife and wildlife lovers.

"We wanted to do something big and bold to grab the nation's attention and encourage everyone to play their part in helping protect them from extinction.

"And what's more eye-catching than a miniature holiday park, designed and built especially for hedgehogs? We hope this world's first will inspire people to support our prickly pals at their most vulnerable time of year."
