He lost so much blood in the attack that doctors said he should have died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than fearing these apex predators, he went on to become a shark conservationist and has dedicated his life to capturing mesmerising photographs of them.<\/p>\n<p>After swimming with sharks over the past two decades, Mike has learned there are important dos and don&#8217;ts to consider if you encounter one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He tells MailOnline Travel: \u2018The safest way to be underwater with sharks is to have clear visibility and lots of eye contact with sharks. It shows a great white shark named Buckethead off the coast of Mexico&#8217;s Guadalupe Island<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/07\/07\/75882599-12601911-Following_a_1997_shark_attack_Hawaiian_photographer_Mike_Coots_a-a-27_1696658841166.jpg\" height=\"717\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Following a 1997 shark attack in which he lost his right leg at the calf when he was bitten by a tiger shark while bodyboarding off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii, Hawaiian photographer Mike Coots (above) devoted his life to shark conservation\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When photographers are trying to capture pictures of these creatures, one dangerous mistake they can make is to get distracted by the camera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mike, who recently released a stunning photo book of shark photography titled \u2018Shark: Portraits\u2019, says: \u2018They get caught up in looking through the camera viewfinder too much and are unaware of what\u2019s happening around them, especially if there are multiple sharks in the area.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>When are sharks most likely to attack? Mike says that people can provoke an attack if they&#8217;re in &#8216;murky water&#8217; or &#8216;splashing and looking like an injured animal&#8217;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He instructs: \u2018Don\u2019t splash, panic, and if underwater always look at the shark and make yourself seem large.\u2019 It&#8217;s a mistake\u00a0to turn away from these creatures, he says, warning: \u2018Don\u2019t turn your back on a shark.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And there are certain red flags to suggest that a shark is preparing for an attack. \u2018They will drop their pectoral fins and arch their body and swim erratically,\u2019 Coots explains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/10\/07\/07\/76270421-12601911-image-a-21_1696658622073.jpg\" height=\"509\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Don\u2019t splash, panic, and if underwater always look at the shark and make yourself seem large,\u2019 says Mike. He says the biggest misconception about these creatures is \u2018that a shark wants to bite you as soon as you enter the water\u2019. In fact, that\u2019s \u2018the furthest from the truth\u2019, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Coots thinks that humans&#8217; misguided fear of sharks is largely a response to their representation in Hollywood &#8211;
