Looking for a new city to explore on foot? The expert team at Preply have shared Europe’s most walkable destinations and a gorgeous city in Greece is one of the continent’s best.

According to the team’s research, a Spanish city is the continent’s most pedestrian-friendly but Athens took fifth place on the list. Britons will find the city’s top attractions are a mere two-mile walk from each other.

Tourists will be able to walk the distance in under an hour with an average of just 4,410 steps. Unsurprisingly many of the city’s top attractions are ancient wonders.

The Parthenon, a former temple on the Acropolis, is the city’s top site and can be spotted on its hill from much of Athens. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena during the fifth century.

The Acropolis has actually introduced a new ticketing system to try to control crowding at the site. The number of tourists that can enter each day will now be capped to protect the site.

One of the best areas to explore on foot in Athens is Plaka, which has a hillside village feel. The neighbourhood sits under the shadow of the Acropolis and has cobblestone streets.
