Each year, the travel expert team at Lonely Planet crowns the best destinations in the world. For 2024’s ranking, there are hotspots all around the world to explore.
While the UK didn’t get any of the top spots, a gorgeous area of Scotland was named one of the best regions to visit. Far North Scotland took 10th place on the list.
A spokesperson said: “2024 will hopefully mean new recognition for this region, as it aims to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status, explore its unsung boggy interior and a coastline of heartbreaking beauty.
“Up on the roof of Scotland is the evocatively named the Flow Country, one of Europe’s bleakly beautiful ecosystems.”
One of the UK’s most unsung destinations, the Flow Country’s unique landscape is well worth exploring. An area of deep peat and bog pools, the Flow Country is more than twice the size of Orkney Island.

The Flow Country encompasses more than 400,000 hectares of blanket bog, making it the largest bog habitat in Europe. The bogs have been there since the end of the last Ice Age and the peat is now up to 10m deep.
Learn more about the bog at the Forsinard Flows Visitor Centre, which sits right in the centre of the peat.
A tourist ‘AdnerbTupp84’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Unexpected excellent find! A very informative visitors centre followed up by a lovely detailed walk out to the viewing tower and back.”
‘Sharon H’ said: “Inspiring day out. Beautiful reserves, loved the small marvels. Really impressed with the design, from the restored bogs to the paths and the hide.”

The area is so remote, that several of the tiny stations en route only serve a couple of houses. As the UK draws into winter, it’s also the perfect time for stargazing.
